My Favourite Austen Hero

One of Jane Austen’s many talents was to create hero’s that women have swooned over for centuries. I thought I would kick off with my favourite Austen Hero.

Captain Frederick Wentworth is my favourite Austen Hero because he is a self made man. Wentworth did not inherit his money like many of the other Austen Hero’s he earned his money and worked his way up the ranks to become a Captain.  In the 19th Century Captain Wentworth is a new breed of gentleman. Captain Wentworth first met Ann Elliot 8 years before the beginning of Persuasion yet their connection was severed due to his humble upbringing.

When Wentworth and Ann cross paths again their relationship is not without it struggles.  Their feelings for each other appear to be unclear and undeclared until Wentworth pens the most wonderful and over the top letter.  Wentworth tells Ann in his letter that “You Pierce my soul. I am half agony, half hope.

I love the fact that Wentworth just puts himself out there. He has already been left broken hearted by Ann once before yet, he is prepared to go there again, so devoted is his love for her. In all honesty I think it is his letter that sways it for me. Anyone who can write with such fine penmanship is certainly worth swooning over. I would love someone to write to me like that.
